Today, I received a inquiry from a prospective customer who found us online.
He told me that he lives in a self-built rural house and uses municipal tap water for daily household use, with no water tower installed. He now wants to install a household water filtration system on the main water inlet pipe to supply filtered water to every faucet in the home.
He also emphasized that he wanted a whole house water filtration system, not an under sink water filter that only treats water for a single faucet.
This customer’s request just perfectly confirmed one of my recent observations.
Although municipal tap water is generally much cleaner than natural well water, its quality can still be affected during distribution and storage, thus, there are more and more urban customers choosing ultrafiltration water filters for household water filtration system.
With a filtration rating of 0.1 microns, the filtration rate of a ultrafiltration water filter is 400 times finer than a traditional 40μm steel-mesh water filter, and 10~50 times finer than PP sediment filters.
It is the ultra-high filtration rate that allows ultrafiltration water filters to effectively intercept fine silt, rust, colloids, parasite eggs, and other tiny impurities in the water, which makes it the best househole water filtration system.
However, what makes this customer’s situation tricky is that there is no shared plumbing shaft in his residential building, leaving very limited space for household water filtration system installation.
So he asked whether a single ultrafiltration whole house water filter could support backwashing?
To help me better understand his idea, he thoughtfully sent me a schematic diagram showing how a single ultrafiltration water filter could be backwashed. The backwashing solution shown in the diagram uses untreated raw water, routed through a bypass pipe, to backwash the ultrafiltration membrane cartridge.
Since the image was a screenshot from the internet and carried another manufacturer’s watermark, I won’t share it here.
From a professional perspective, however, I do not recommend ChengrongTimes customers use raw water for backwashing.
First, we need to clarify what backwashing means:
Let the water enter from the filtered water outlet of the ultrafiltration household water filtration system. Then, filtered water flows from the inside of the ultrafiltration membrane outward, thereby backwashing the membrane from the inside out.
However, when use the untreated raw water to backwash the ultrafiltration membrane cartridge, the sediment, rust, and other impurities in the raw water will attach to the inner wall of the membrane filaments, causing secondary contamination of the filter cartridge and worsening clogging of the membrane pores.
There is also a filtration process while the backwashing.
So I always tell my customers that if you cannot use filtered water to back-wash the UF membrane cartridge, then you’d better not to do it.
If you wanna back wash the ultrafiltration membrane cartridge, but without a water tank equipped, then please install a parallel ultrafiltration water filter next to the ultrafiltration household water filtration system.
When one need to be backwashed, then let the other one to supply the filtered water for back-washing.
And for PVDF ultrafiltration water filter, only with backwashing is not enough, if the users wanna thoroughly clean the ultrafiltration membrane cartridge, then he should simultaneously backwash and manual scrub the filter cartridge.
