Can a Whole Home Water Filtration System Remove Limescale? Here’s What You Need to Know About the Softener System

since October last year, ChengrongTimes team has begun hosting live streams.

Through these live streams, more and more end users have realized that there are so many ultrafiltration water filter brands on the market are actually manufactured by Chengrong Ultrafiltration Factory. And as a TOP 3 manufacturer in the industry of China, Chengrong Ultrafiltration Factory also provides ODM/OEM manufacturing services for 5 leading global brands for their product line of water filters for home.

And ChengrongTimes is the factory brand of Chengrong Ultrafiltration Factory, whose manufacturing quality, product functionality, and structural design stand among the the top 1% in the industry, staying aligned with leading global brands.

Because ChengrongTimes whole home water filtration systems are known for reliable performance and quality, many quality-conscious users have been interested in the whole house water filters from ChengrongTimes.

Over time, we have noticed that many end users tend to confuse whole home water filtration system with water softener system.

As we have always been asked by the users that:” Can a ChengrongTimes ultrafiltration water filter system remove the heavy limescale in my water?”

Our answer is: NO.

ChengrongTimes ultrafiltration water filter have a filtration rating of 0.1 μm, making them highly effective for whole home water filtration. They can help reduce impurities such as sediment, rust, colloids, parasite eggs, and certain bacteria from city water or well water.

However, a whole home water filtration system is not the same as a water softener.

They are two different systems.

Limescale forms when high-level calcium and magnesium minerals in water precipitate under high temperatures and build up as hard deposits. Therefore, to prevent limescale buildup, the key is to reduce the levels of calcium and magnesium minerals in the water.

However, water filtration mainly removes suspended impurities through physical interception, while water softening reduces hardness by dealing with calcium and magnesium ions through a chemical ion exchange process.

That is why limescale removal is the job of a water softener, not the requirement for a whole home water filtration system.

Some users may ask: what about RO reverse osmosis systems?

It is true that an RO membrane can offer extremely high filtration precision, as fine as 0.1 nm. It can remove all the impurities, dissolved solids, and hardness-related minerals from water. It is the reason that allows RO systems to provide both high-level filtration and a certain water-softening effect.

However, RO is not an ideal solution for whole home water filtration and softener system.

First, many RO systems produce wastewater.

It may be acceptable for a single drinking water faucet, while it is far less practical when the RO system is expected to supply every faucet and water-using appliance in the whole house. For most users, this level of water waste is unacceptable.

Second, RO system itself usually require relatively good incoming water quality. If the raw city water or well water has high turbidity or high hardness, the RO membrane may become clogged, scaled, or worn out much faster without proper pre-treatment. This leads to super higher replacement and maintenance costs.

Therefore, if your goal is whole home water filtration, an ultrafiltration water filter is a more practical choice.

Compared with most other whole house water filters, ultrafiltration offers higher filtration precision. Although RO reverse osmosis membranes provide even finer filtration, they are not suitable for most whole home water filtration applications.

In short:

  • ultrafiltration is the best choice for whole house water filtration system.
  • Water softeners are used for limescale control.
  • RO systems could only be suitable for point-of-use drinking water filtration, not whole house water treatment.
